Understanding Behaviour Support

Behaviour tells us something.

A person may be communicating that a situation is too difficult, unpredictable, uncomfortable, overwhelming or simply not working for them.

Applied Behaviour Analysis, or ABA, uses observation and behavioural principles to better understand what is happening and identify practical ways to support meaningful change.

At Allied Therapy, behaviour therapy is individualized and neurodivergent-affirming. We focus on goals that improve quality of life, participation, communication, independence and safety.

Your child has difficulty communicating needs, preferences or boundaries.

You are concerned about hitting, biting, running away or other unsafe behaviour.

You would like support building independence, communication, coping or daily living skills.

Behaviour Assessment May Include:

1. Learn

We begin by learning about the person, their strengths, communication, routines, preferences and the situations that are currently difficult.

2. Observe

We look for patterns in what happens before, during and after the behaviour and consider the environment around the person.

When appropriate, we use behavioural assessment tools, data collection and structured observation to better understand what may be contributing.

4. Plan

Together, we develop practical recommendations and meaningful goals that fit everyday life.

Every assessment is personalized. Your child may not require every component, and activities will be selected based on their age, needs, comfort and goals.

How we can help

Understanding behaviour
Helping your family recognize patterns in behaviour, what may be contributing to difficult situations and what your child may be communicating through their actions.

Communication and self-advocacy
Building more effective ways for your child to express needs, preferences, discomfort, requests for help and boundaries.

Everyday routines
Developing practical strategies for routines such as getting ready, hygiene, mealtimes, bedtime, leaving the house and completing everyday tasks.

Transitions and flexibility
Supporting your child through starting, stopping, waiting, changing activities and managing expected or unexpected changes.

Regulation and recovery
Identifying proactive supports, communication strategies and environmental changes that may reduce overwhelm and help your child recover from difficult moments.

Independence and daily living skills
Breaking meaningful everyday skills into manageable steps and supporting your child to participate with greater independence and confidence.

School, daycare and community participation
Developing strategies that can support communication, routines, safety, transitions and participation across the places your child spends time.

Caregiver coaching and environmental support
Helping caregivers understand what may be contributing to behaviour and make practical changes to expectations, routines, communication and the environment.

Therapy is individualized and neurodivergent-affirming. We do not use behaviour therapy to suppress harmless autistic traits, prioritize compliance for its own sake or make children appear more typical. We focus on communication, autonomy, safety, participation, meaningful skill development and quality of life.

Support from an Board Certified Behaviour Analyst or the right team

Behaviour therapy and ABA support at Allied Therapy are provided by Behaviour Analysts. Behaviour Analysts assess patterns of behaviour, communication, routines and environmental factors to better understand what may be contributing to everyday challenges and identify practical ways to support meaningful change.

Support may include direct therapy, caregiver coaching, environmental recommendations, skill development and collaboration with schools, daycares or other members of your child’s team when appropriate.

When behaviour concerns overlap with communication, sensory processing, emotional regulation, feeding or other functional needs, another Allied Therapy professional may collaborate when appropriate. This could include a Speech-Language Pathologist or Occupational Therapist.

Your child will not automatically require multiple services. We recommend collaboration only when it is relevant to your child’s needs, priorities and your family’s goals.

What progress may look like

    Progress may mean:
-The person has more effective ways to communicate needs and preferences.
    -Everyday routines become more manageable.
-Caregivers better understand what may be contributing to behaviour.
-The environment is better matched to the person's needs.
-The person develops greater independence in meaningful activities.
-Unsafe or highly disruptive situations occur less often or are easier to manage.
-The individual has greater choice, participation and autonomy.

Progress looks different for every person. Goals should reflect what is meaningful to the individual and family.

FAQs

Is ABA only for young autistic children?
No. Behavioural approaches can be used with children, teens and adults when they are appropriate to the person's goals and needs.

Do you use rewards or compliance-based ABA?
Our approach prioritizes meaningful participation, autonomy, communication and quality of life. We do not set goals simply to make someone appear more neurotypical or suppress harmless autistic characteristics.

Do I need an autism diagnosis?
Not necessarily. Behaviour therapy may be appropriate for a range of developmental, behavioural and functional concerns. Our team can help determine whether the service fits your needs.

Can you work with my child's school or daycare?
Yes. With consent and when clinically appropriate, collaboration may include caregivers, educators and other professionals.

Can behaviour therapy happen outside the clinic?
Depending on the goals and service arrangement, assessment or intervention may include home, school, daycare or community environments.
