About This Funding Program
Nova Scotia’s Employment Support and Income Assistance program may provide additional special-needs assistance based on a person’s individual circumstances. Special needs may relate to health and safety, or work and training. People already receiving Income Assistance can discuss requests with their caseworker; the Province also describes a process for people applying for help with a one-time special need without seeking basic income assistance. Eligibility, professional documentation and item or service approval are governed by provincial policy and regulations.
How Allied Therapy Can Help
Depending on the need, Allied Therapy can provide speech-language, occupational, behaviour and mental health services, as well as clinical assessments and recommendations within the clinician’s professional scope. Where appropriate, our team can provide service descriptions, estimates or documentation for the person to discuss with their caseworker. This is not a guarantee that an assessment, private therapy appointment, assistive device or AAC equipment will be funded.
How Funding Works
Before booking any appointment intended to be funded through special-needs assistance, contact your Income Assistance caseworker or the relevant provincial office. Ask whether the specific item or clinical service can be considered, what evidence is required, whether other programs must be used first, and whether written preauthorization is needed. Allied Therapy can provide information about its services and fees; the Province decides eligibility and who is paid. One-time applicants should follow the provincial Income Assistance application process.
Who Can Access or Refer
Individuals receiving Income Assistance, people considering a one-time special-needs request, families, caregivers, support workers, caseworkers and community agencies can contact Allied Therapy. The person or authorized representative should work directly with the provincial program about benefit eligibility.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Does Income Assistance automatically pay for speech, OT or behaviour therapy?
A: No. Special-needs requests are individually assessed under provincial rules and may have exclusions or requirements.
Q: Can I ask for a one-time special need if I do not receive Income Assistance?
A: The Province says people who need help with a one-time special need, but not basic needs, can use its application process. Eligibility still applies.
Q: Can Allied Therapy prepare an estimate or receipt?
A: Yes, Allied Therapy can provide appropriate service details and standard billing documents.
Q: Can the program help with communication or accessibility equipment?
A: Some health- or disability-related items may be considered under applicable rules; ask a caseworker about the exact item and required authorization.
Q: Who decides whether the service is covered?
A: The provincial program, not Allied Therapy.
Q: Should I book first?
A: Check funding approval and payment requirements first if you intend to use the program.
