About This Funding Program

The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is a federal non-refundable tax credit for eligible people with severe and prolonged impairments; it can also connect families to other programs. The Child Disability Benefit is a tax-free monthly benefit for eligible families caring for a child under 18 who qualifies for the DTC and where the family qualifies for the Canada Child Benefit. The Canada Disability Benefit provides income-tested support for eligible adults aged 18 to 64 who are approved for the DTC and meet other requirements. Some qualifying therapy, services and prescribed communication devices may be claimable under the Medical Expense Tax Credit. These are distinct programs with different eligibility rules.

How Allied Therapy Can Help

Allied Therapy's Speech-Language Pathologists and Occupational Therapists may be able to provide clinical assessments and functional documentation within their professional scope. For the DTC, the Canada Revenue Agency permits SLPs to certify the speaking category and OTs to certify walking, feeding and dressing. Completion of tax forms depends on the individual clinician's scope, information available and service arrangements; Allied does not decide eligibility. We can also provide standard receipts for services and discuss AAC equipment recommendations. We do not provide tax or financial advice.

We have worked with, and trusted, Dr. Wayne MacLeod in Bedford who operated https://benefits2.ca

How Funding Works

Review the official Canada Revenue Agency and Service Canada websites for each program. If applying for the DTC, the applicant and an eligible practitioner complete the required portions of Form T2201. Don't have a family doctor? You can still apply here through Dr. Wayne MacLeod.

CRA determines DTC eligibility; other benefits have their own application and tax-return requirements. Save itemized receipts and check whether any expense meets current CRA rules. Only unreimbursed amounts generally qualify for the medical expense claim. Ask your accountant or tax advisor about your personal situation.

Who Can Access or Refer

Individuals with disabilities, parents, guardians, caregivers and community professionals can use these resources. Inquiries to Allied about assessment or documentation can be made directly; the relevant government agency manages each benefit application.

Frequently Asked Questions

A: The CRA recognizes SLPs for the speaking category, subject to the practitioner having sufficient clinical information.

Q: Can an Occupational Therapist sign a DTC application?

A: The CRA recognizes OTs for walking, feeding and dressing categories.

Q: What is the Child Disability Benefit?

A: A tax-free monthly payment for eligible families of children under 18 approved for the DTC and eligible for the Canada Child Benefit.

Q: What is the Canada Disability Benefit?

A: A separate income-tested federal benefit for eligible adults, generally aged 18 to 64, with approved DTC eligibility.

Q: Can I claim speech therapy or an AAC device as a medical expense?
